What is a Biome?

As you travel through the world of Minecraft, you'll encounter a variety of environments, many of which resemble those found here on Earth. These different topographies are called Biomes.

The variety includes beautiful plains, temperate forests, bland deserts, and spectacular snow-capped mountains.

Why are Biomes Important?

Knowing the Biomes in Minecraft is very useful, as this helps you know what to expect, especially when playing in survival mode.

Let's say, you decide to journey through a desert biome, the number of trees there is limited, and it is difficult to build with sand.

If you decide to construct a shelter with a roof to stay overnight, you will need to bring some wood with you.

How to Identify Your Current Biome

If at any point in the game you want to know which biome you're in, simply press the F3 button.

You'll be provided with a 'Heads Up Display' containing lots of information.

The name of the biome is in the upper left corner. The Biome will be displayed and the biome's name. e.g., Biome: desert or Biome: plains.

The Biomes

There are different biomes divided into five main categories. We'll take a look at a few under each category and give a brief description.

Lush Biomes

Plains Biome

Plains are very common. They are easily identifiable and spawn a lot of passive mobs like pigs, cows, sheep, and horses.

They usually border on forests. Villages are also common here occupied with NPCs (Non-Playable Characters). This is a great place to start off your survival game.

Forest

The forest biome mostly contains trees. The tree species can vary, but the most common type is the oak and birch tree. There are also flowers spread around, and occasionally you can find mushrooms.

Dark or Roofed Forest

This biome contains dark oak trees and large mushrooms. The dark forest is very dangerous because the trees grow to form a dense canopy creating a dark atmosphere. Hostile mobs can spawn because of this gloomy atmosphere. You can also find woodland mansions here, although they are very rare.

Swamp

The swamp contains shallow bodies of discolored water and discolored grass, with oak trees covered in vines. Swamp biomes are the only place lily pads and blue orchids can be found. Players most often find clay here because of the high quantity of shallow water. Although you can come across witch huts and slime, mostly on a full moon.

Jungle

A jungle is a heavily forested biome, that's similar to a tropical rainforest. The tallest of trees can be found in the jungles and covered in vines. Melon, cocoa beans are common here and it's the only place ocelot spawns.

Mushroom Fields

These biomes are rare and they make use of mycelium instead of grass. Mushroom fields are usually located far away from other land-masses.

Here there aren't any trees, only giant mushrooms. Any dirt placed on a mushroom field is eventually converted into mycelium. Also, mobs don't naturally spawn here.

Cold Biome

Mountains (Extreme Hills)

This is a mountainous biome that features dull grey-blue grass and some isolated oaks and spruce trees.

There are cliffs, waterfalls, peaks, valleys, overhangs, and many other structures that offer excellent views.

This biome has more underground cave systems than any other biome.

Falling poses a significant risk, as there are rocky outcrops and sudden drops, often invisible and the drops can cause severe damage or death.

Taiga

This is a biome filled with spruce trees and dull grey-blue grass. Hills and wolves are more common here than in other biomes. Water freezes into ice in the colder variants.

Snowy Biome

Snowy Tundra

These are biomes that are completely covered with snow and have blocks of ice because of the water freezes.

Spruce trees can be found here. In this biome, snowfalls in place of rain and wolves also spawn here.

Dry Biome

Desert

The desert biome is the richest source of cacti and has naturally-occurring desert wells. These wells are rare.

The hills and small mountains in these biomes are made of sand and sandstone. Desert temples can also spawn in large deserts.

Savanna

In this biome are dull, dry grass, and acacia trees. In this biome, it never rains and often it borders deserts or mesas.

Llamas spawn here and NPC villages also spawn here naturally, together with horses.

Badlands (Mesa)

The badlands have different colors of clay and natural terracotta, which can be quarried and dyed for decorative purposes. This biome also contains red sand.

Other features of this biome are dead bushes and occasionally cacti. Badlands are rare and usually spawn close to savanna biomes.

Ocean Biome

Ocean

These are large, vast biomes that consist completely of water. Far below the water, there is a landscape consisting of gravel, earth, and clay. The biomes often flow into mine shafts or caves that are abandoned.

Ocean biomes do not have a largest size, but they are usually between 10,000 and 25,000 blocks wide. Occasionally, ocean biomes contain small islands with a bit of vegetation.

How to Change the Biome in Minecraft Set the area you want to change.

You can make use of block selector or use #selecting to execute it from a command block.

This is particularly useful to give generating structures their own biomes for custom mob spawning.
